It may be that I'm the result of Depression-era parents or that I'm just plain cheap. I rely on elbow grease and baking soda to clean the bathroom; we use clothespins to keep our chip bags shut; plastic bags work great the second time around; you won't find that many pieces of clothing in my closet that cost more than $20; and my workout "club" doubles as the laundry room.

Today's post marks a Beading Daily first: my challenge project for Beadwork's June/July issue was directly inspired by one of you! When Beading Daily reader Bethany sent me an email asking me about creating jewelry using her grandmother's buttons, I started thinking about button jewelry. Many of the instructions I found on various websites mentioned cutting the shanks off the buttons. I knew I couldn't ask Bethany to do that to an heirloom collection.

After experiencing a frustrating year of health concerns, doctors, and hospitals in 2007, I started seeing a naturopath. I'd never been to a natural healer and can't claim I welcomed Diane into my life without a big dose of skepticism. But as I have since seen results (restless legs abated! digestion quieted! back surgery cancelled! pounds lost!), I'm not going to question how or why.

Thread is Cheaper Than Frustration and 4 More Thread Tips

"Thread is cheaper than frustration." That was some recent advice I received from Bead Expo Philadelphia instructor Liz Smith. I laughed when I read her email because it reminded me of when I started to learn beadweaving. Coming from the world of expensive beading wire, I was afraid of wasting thread so I used these ridiculously short pieces two and three inches long. I struggled to learn the various stitches until one day I used the exact amount of thread (something like 4 feet!) that a project recommended. I couldn't believe how much easier that made everything! That was a big lesson for me: don't be so afraid of wasting thread that you waste a lot of time!

Coiled Wire Necklace with Lampwork Pendant

Several months ago I bought a beautiful purple and green lampwork focal bead. I assumed I would hang it vertically in whatever design I came up with. (That's right, I'm one of those people who buys beads without a definite project in mind!) When I saw Kitty Durmaj's Southwest Desert necklace, I had an "ah-ha" moment. Why not hang the bead horizontally instead? Just that simple change from vertical to horizontal has opened up a number of design possibilities that I never would have considered before.

Tips for New Beadweavers

Beading Daily reader Christine K. wrote, "I am a brand-new beginner now attempting to learn the off-loom stitches. Although I am generally skilled with crafts that use one's hands (e.g., I can both crochet and knit), my learning of beading stitches is SLOW. My major question now is: what is the main difference between right-angle weave stitch and peyote stitch? Also, when I try to work in peyote stitch, I find it difficult to make the beads lay correctly. After figuring out the main difference between peyote stitch and right-angle stitch, is the "trick" to making the beads lay correctly to just relax and continue to thread the beads as required by peyote/right-angle stitch?"

Frog and Toad are Friends, Guinness Book of World Records, Betty Crocker's Cookbook for Boys and Girls . . . Ever since I heard that the new juried Beadwork exhibition would combine books and beads, titles of my favorite childhood books have been popping into my head at odd moments. If I add in my adult memories of books (English major in college, reference librarian jobs, book club follies), it seems like there is no end to the number of design possibilities for this exhibition. Even though as an employee I can't enter, I'm very tempted to jump in and play anyway just for myself--and for you--if any of you would like to see what I come up with!

Fringe is a fun way to add a little pizzazz to a project. At least, that's what I've been told. I'm not much into fringe myself--it feels too fussy for my designs. But a recent discovery has had me thinking about fringe a lot lately. I'd love to say it was because I've seen the light and been converted to a fringe-lovin' fool, but in truth, it's all because of the color brown.

Some tourists may snap up T-shirts or boxes of salt water taffy, but when I travel, it's all about the beads. A bead or even a handful of beads is the perfect souvenir--small, not too pricey, and lasting, never shrinking or fading, or worse, being eaten. Whenever I paw through my bead stash, memories of my trips coming flooding back. There are those pretty shell flower beads from that shop in Honolulu that was nearly impossible to find, but oh so worth it! There is a tube of hip anodized blue jump rings from a funky bead shop in Ohio and pretty silver dollar charms--perfect for summery earrings--from California. And how can I forget the pair of copper leaf beads that I bought when I was in Australia last year?

Mistakes or Design Features?

Everyone makes mistakes--and part of my job is to encourage you to make them! Yes, you read that right. If you're not making mistakes, chances are you're not trying new techniques or new materials or stretching yourself creatively. The question is not whether or not you'll ever make a mistake on your beading project, it's what do you do about it? Do you redo it? Do you try to cover it up? Or maybe you'll use mistakes as inspiration for a future project. When I interviewed Carol Blackburn, author of Making Polymer Clay Beads, I asked her the difference between her former fiber career and her new jewelry making career. She said, "When things go wrong with polymer clay, it's a design opportunity, but with knitting you have to unpick and start again!"

Provided by Bead It!, the kit contained garnets, seed beads, metal rounds, pearls, rondelles, fire-polished rounds, and a clasp. Not a subtle, dainty clasp either--this silver and garnet box clasp was a "Me! Me! Look at me!" type of closure. Doesn't sound dangerous, does it? The problem was that I was in the middle of another beading project when it arrived. I set the box clasp from the kit next to some chain maille earrings I was creating as a gift for a friend. Now she sells her handcrafted beads at shows across the U.S. and just finished her first book, Bead Romantique, an art history-inspired beadweaving book for the intermediate and advanced beader. Learn how Lisa made the leap to full-time beading and what's next for one of the most creative and hardest working ("Who need sleep?") beader in the business.

What happened is a whole lot of learning and not so many sales. (Read "Beads for Sale!" if you want to relive my experience.) I expected people to complain about unusual colors or shapes, beads with holes in odd places or no holes at all. When contest finalist Susan Jacobs mentioned that she kept her headpins straight by storing them in vials that was a lightbulb moment for me! Other tips made me rethink my whole notion of the creative process. Many beaders, for example, mentioned the importance of using containers like glass jars that let you see your collection. I never realized it before, but I do get more ideas when my beads are spread around me than when they are tidily tucked out of sight. No wonder I've been resisting the typical opaque storage containers!

Julia's technique of using a strong focal bead to inspire the colors and theme of a necklace is a great tried-and-true technique that has inspired many of my own designs. Just a year or two ago, it was not unusual for me to walk into a bead store and not find any copper chain or findings. Copper is still fairly hard to find in the large chain stores.
